Manchester United boss Solskjaer unhappy with summer transfers despite spending over £100 million

Just over a month after Cristiano Ronaldo made his sensational return to Manchester United and the Red Devils were being touted as title contenders, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side are once again on the brink of crisis. 

United are now winless in the Premier League in three games, following a 4-2 defeat at the hands of Leicester City on Saturday.

The result pushed the club down to sixth in the table, and speculation is once again building about the future of Solskjaer.

The former United striker was heavily criticised for his decision to leave both Ronaldo and Paul Pogba on the bench for the 2-2 draw with Everton, and once again came under fire for his game management against the Foxes.

Now, it is being reported that the former Cardiff City boss was disgruntled at his side’s summer transfer business, despite spending more than £100 million during the window.

Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane both arrived at Old Trafford in big money deals, while Ronaldo returned for just £13 million but is reportedly earning as much as £385,000-per-week.

Solskjaer is still yet to deliver a trophy as United manager

According to the Manchester Evening News, however, Solskjaer was left frustrated by United’s failure to sign a central midfielder.

The report suggests that there was an agreement within the club that a winger and a central defender should be the priority, however.

Despite the talent of Pogba and Bruno Fernandes, United’s lack of midfield balance has caused them problems so far this term, and they have won just five of their 11 matches in all competitions.

Scott McTominay, Fred and Nemanja Matic have all been deployed at the base of United’s midfield, but it is a problem area that the club failed to solve during the summer.

They were heavily linked with ex-Rennes midfielder Eduardo Camavinga, but a move never materialised and the Frenchman ultimately joined Real Madrid.

Declan Rice was another name touted as a target for the Red Devils, but the England international stayed put in East London with current club West Ham United.

With his midfield conundrum still getting the better of him, Solskjaer may use the Champions League game against Atalanta on Wednesday as preparation for a potentially crucial game against Liverpool on Sunday.
