Manchester United could smash their own transfer record with £140million signing of Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly in January, according to Lancslive

Despite signing former Leicester City man Harry Maguire in the summer, reports suggest United could be willing to strengthen their defence even further in January.

It’s thought the Red Devils tried to sign Koulibaly and had a £90million bid rejected, but Napoli President Aurelio De Laurentiis has now hinted that he could be willing to sign the club’s prize asset.

Napoli President Aurelio De Laurentiis was very open about the Koulibaly situation.

He said: “I loved Koulibaly the man so I refused €105m, but a time will come when I’ll have to sell him. Whoever says we didn’t improve our defence is wrong.”

Manchester United fans will be very keen for manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to bring in a defender of the Senegal international Koulibaly, as the gigantic club are struggling to challenge for Champions League places.
