Manchester United will be looking to lift a trophy for the first time in nearly six years when they face Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup final on Sunday.

The Red Devils have been in sensational form since the World Cup, with Marcus Rashford netting 16 times and providing five assists to help propel United into third place in the Premier League table.

The club’s last trophy came under Jose Mourinho in 2017 when they lifted the Community Shield, Carabao Cup and Europa League.

Sunday represents an opportunity to end that baron spell, but United face a Newcastle side that have so far defied expectations this season.

The Red Devils remain in four competitions at present, although they will likely look to bolster their squad this summer regardless of how successful it proves to be.

With that in mind, United are said to be plotting a move for Bayer Leverkusen full-back Jeremie Frimpong, according to Football Insider.

The report claims that the Premier League side have been scouting the 22-year-old this season and have been impressed by his performances for the Bundesliga side.

Frimpong is a target for Man United this summer

Frimpong, who joined the German club from Scottish side Celtic back in 2021, has made 29 appearances for Leverkusen so far this season.

The Dutchman, who spent time with United’s rivals Manchester City as a youngster, has made more than 75 appearances for his current side to date.

His current employers reportedly value Frimpong at around £40-£50 million, but United remain hopeful that a deal could be agreed for a lower price, potentially around £30-£35 million.

The defender’s current contract with the Bundesliga outfit is due to expire in the summer of 2025 and, although he is happy at Leverkusen, it is claimed that the full-back is keen to join an English club competing in the Champions League.

United boss Ten Hag is said to be keen on adding a full-back to his squad ahead of next term, despite Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s recent resurgence.

The Englishman’s Old Trafford career looked to be all-but-over at the end of last season, but he has now become a regular under Ten Hag, although it is suggested that he could still depart this summer.

Diogo Dalot is also set to sign a new contract with the club, the report claims, although United are still intent on moving for Frimpong, who has scored five goals and provided seven assists this term.
