Manchester United have reportedly started proceedings in their bid to lure Portugal international defender Nélson Semedo to Old Trafford next year, according to The Times.

The Premier League side, who head into Christmas sixth in the top-flight standings following last Saturday’s 2-0 victory at West Brom, have been continually linked with a move for the Benfica right-back during previous transfer windows and have already enquired about his availability.

The 23-year-old, who has one international cap for his country after making his Portugal debut against Serbia back in October 2015, has scored two goals and provided four assists in 24 appearances in all competitions for the Liga NOS outfit so far this season.

However Semedo, who joined Benfica back in January 2012, is also said to be a transfer target for Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich as well.

The report suggests that Red Devils manager Jose Mourinho wants to sign a new right-back within the next two transfer windows, providing competition for fellow full-back Antonio Valencia at The Theatre of Dreams, whilst Italy international Matteo Darmian is likely to leave United next year.

Semedo has a €80m release clause, although the report suggests he could be available for £25m.
