Manchester United will be challenged by Arsenal in the race for Juventus’ Medhi Benatia, according to The Sun.

The 31-year-old has played just four matches this term since Leonardo Bonucci returned to the club from AC Milan to partner Giorgio Chiellini in the heart of defence.

Despite the Italian giants looking strong contenders in three competitions once more, the Morocco star is not prepared to sit on the substitutes’ bench much longer.

This originally alerted the Red Devils with boss Jose Mourinho having tried all summer to bring a new centre-back to Old Trafford.

However, reports in Tuttomercatoweb suggest that the Gunners now lead the race to sign the ex-Bayern Munich man.

Medhi Benatia has reportedly become a target for Arsenal boss Unai Emery.

Boss Unai Emery is looking to build on a decent start to the season by adding a strong defender to his side in the January transfer window.

And with the Old Lady thought to only be looking for offers in the region of £13million for the vastly experienced international, it presents an affordable option to the north London.

Benatia, who was born in France, has also represented the likes of Udinese and AS Roma in a career spanning 329 club appearances.
