Benfica striker Darwin Nunez once again showed why several of Europe’s top teams are chasing him on Wednesday, as he scored in the Portuguese side’s 3-3 draw with Liverpool at Anfield.

The 22-year-old netted a late equaliser to salvage a draw for Benfica, although they still exited the competition following a 6-4 aggregate defeat to the Reds.

Nunez had scored in the first leg of the quarter final tie, and also had another three goals ruled out on Wednesday night.

His performances have not gone unnoticed, however, and a number of top clubs from across Europe are believed to be monitoring him.

Manchester United and Chelsea, along with French giants Paris Saint-Germain, are believed to be leading the race to sign the Uruguayan, while Arsenal have fallen down the pecking order.

Now, it appears that current United striker Edinson Cavani is helping to persuade Nunez to join the club, despite the fact that he could replace him this summer.

According to 90min, the veteran forward first alerted the Red Devils to the talents of his fellow countryman last year, and has since spoken to the player about the club.

Nunez scored in both legs of Benfica’s Champions League quarter final against Liverpool

Nunez has been in scintillating form so far this term, scoring 24 goals in 24 league games in Portugal.

As well as United, Chelsea and Arsenal, West Ham have also held an interest in the player for a while now, and failed with a deadline day bid for the player in January, however it appears that the Hammers’ desire to sign Nunez has since cooled.

The Uruguay international, who made his debut in 2019, is expected to leave Portugal this summer, and it has been widely reported that his first choice would be to move to England.

Cavani, meanwhile, is expected to depart Old Trafford upon the expiry of his current contract at the end of the season, having played just ten minutes of league football in the last eight games.

The 35-year-old has impressed when called upon for United since joining from PSG in 2020, but injuries have plagued him this term and limited him to just six league starts.

United will therefore be in the market for a striker this summer, especially if Cristiano Ronaldo decides to leave the club, and Nunez could potentially be the perfect fit for the Red Devils.
