Manchester United were keen on stopper Odisseas Vlachodimos if David de Gea failed to sign a new contract, according to reports.

The 25-year-old has become Benfica’s number 1 goalkeeper since signing from Panathinaikos in 2018.

Playing 50 games in his debut season for the Lisbon-based outfit, the Greece international won the Primeira Liga and Portuguese Super Cup.

But Greek website Sportime.Gr report that Benfica could’ve had a battle on their hands in trying to keep their star as he had caught the eye of the Red Devils.

It’s claimed that United were looking at potential replacements for De Gea, whose deal was set to expire in the summer of 2020.

David de Gea penned a new long-term deal this week.

However, after the Spaniard penned new terms until the summer of 2023 earlier this week any potential move for Vlachodimos now looks unlikely.

De Gea has been a key player at Old Trafford since his £18.9million move from Atletico Madrid in 2011.

The 28-year-old has played 367 matches for United and has won the club’s Player of the Year Award on four occasions.
