Manchester United are one of a number of clubs being linked with a move for Tottenham striker Harry Kane, who shocked fans by reportedly revealing his desire to leave North London this summer.

According to Sky Sports, United are one of three Premier League clubs, along with Manchester City and Chelsea, who have already made contact with Kane’s representatives.

However, with City emerging as the frontrunners for Kane’s signature, it appears that United are already making alternative plans to recruit another English striker this summer.

According to the Daily Telegraph, United will now chase Southampton striker Danny Ings, who has just a year remaining on his current deal with the Saints.

The report suggests that United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is keen to bolster his attacking options, despite Edinson Cavani signing a 12 month extension last week, and has identified former Liverpool man Ings as a prime candidate.

Ings has netted 46 times in 99 games for Saints so far, having joined them permanently in 2018, after an initial loan from Liverpool.

Ings has made 56 goal contributions in 99 gamed for the south coast side.

The 28-year-old spent four years at Liverpool, but a combination of injury and being out of favour meant he played just 25 times and scored just four goals.

Speaking recently to an online fans’ forum, Saints’ Chief Executive Martin Semmens insisted that he is confident Ings will remain at St Marys.

“I think he probably will (sign a new contract),” he said.

“Like I’ve said all along, Danny’s been really open and clear with his communication with the club and what he wants to do.

“He’s working hard for us. He’s committed to us.

“We have no issue with Danny.”

Ings would likely be available for a much more affordable price than the £150 million Spurs are reportedly demanding for Kane, and the Saints star could be available for free next summer.
