Manchester United face Newcastle United when the Premier League returns at the start of April, in a game that could prove crucial in deciding which sides finish in the top four.

At present, The Red Devils sit third in the table, three points and two places above The Magpies.

Both sides will be hoping to mount a late surge to finish in the Champions League qualification spots, although the likes of Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool will also be vying for those places.

Regardless of whether or not United do qualify for next season’s Champions League, it looks likely that manager Erik ten Hag will look to bolster his squad ahead of next term.

Now, it appears that The Red Devils have stepped up their interest in one of their defensive targets.

According to The Mail, United have increased their interest in Monaco defender Axel Disasi.

The 25-year-old has impressed in the French top flight this season, and United are believed to be one of a number of Premier League sides to have registered an interest in the player.

Disasi is being watched by a number of Premier League clubs

The centre-back’s current deal with the Ligue 1 side is set to run until 2025, but it is claimed that Monaco would agree to sell Disasi for around £44 million.

United’s interest in the defender stems from the fact that at least one of their current crop is likely to leave this summer.

Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof have found themselves out of favour at Old Trafford this summer, and the pair could leave when the transfer window reopens.

Disasi, who can also play at right-back, has made 39 appearances for Monaco across all competitions this season, taking his tally for the club to 119.

The defender joined Monaco from fellow French side Stade Reims back in 2020.

Other clubs that have been linked with the three-time France international include Paris Saint-Germain, Tottenham Hotspur, Bayern Munich and West Ham United, the report says.
