Manchester United have reportedly joined Tottenham Hotspur in the race to sign Netherlands international midfielder Frenkie de Jong, according to The Sun.

The Premier League side, who face newly promoted Wolverhampton Wanderers at Old Trafford on Saturday (15:00), have been linked with making a move for the highly-rated Ajax starlet ahead of the January transfer window.

The 21-year-old, who has two senior international caps for Holland, has already made 12 appearances in all competitions for the Eredivisie outfit so far this season.

De Jong, who signed for Ajax from Willem II back in the summer of 2015, has scored two goals in 49 first-team outings overall for the Dutch club.

The report claims United have joined Spurs in the chase to land the Netherlands central midfielder after sending scouts to watch the Ajax ace in international action against France earlier this month.

De Jong, who is also thought to be on the radar of La Liga giants FC Barcelona, featured as a late substitute against The Red Devils in the 2017 UEFA Europa League final in Sweden.

The Dutchman is contracted at the Amsterdam outfit until June 2022, and was understood to be the subject of a rejected £44.75m bid from Tottenham this summer.
