Manchester United have told Zinedine Zidane not to accept any managerial job offers until they decide on the future of Jose Mourinho, according to the Sunday Mirror.

The former Real Madrid boss is the Red Devils’ number 1 choice to take the Old Trafford hotseat if they dismiss the Portuguese.

Mourinho was on the brink of losing his post before his side’s stunning 3-2 comeback victory against Newcastle United on Saturday.

But despite that result, there are still serious doubts amongst the United hierarchy as to whether the 55-year-old can take the club in the right direction.

Jose Mourinho has had to deal with weeks of speculation regarding his future.

Zidane, who won three successive Champions League titles during his two-and-a-half years in charge at the Bernabéu, is keen to work in the Premier League.

The 1998 World Cup winner has been learning English and has reportedly already compiled a list of transfer targets as he waits to see if United sack their third manager in four-and-a-half years.

If they decide to wield the axe, the 20-time champions will have deployed the same tactics – of placing a clubless boss on standby – as they did when they were deciding whether to replace Louis van Gaal with Mourinho in 2016.
