Manchester United have reportedly emerged as front runners to sign Brazil international midfielder Frederico Rodrigues de Paula Santos, according to the Daily Star.

The Premier League side, who defeated Brighton and Hove Albion 2-0 at Old Trafford on Saturday night to reach the semi-finals of the FA Cup, have been continuously linked with a summer swoop for the Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder.

The 25-year-old, who has six international caps for his country, has scored three goals and provided four assists in 28 appearances in all competitions for the Premier Liga outfit so far this season.

Better known simply as ‘Fred’, he joined the Ukrainian side back in June 2013 following his move from Internacional, and has netted 14 goals in 146 games overall for the club.

The report claims United have reclaimed pole position in the race to sign the Samba star this summer, with arch rivals Manchester City also said to be chasing his signature, as well as Ligue 1 giants Paris Saint-Germain.

Jose Mourinho’s Red Devils are determined to lure the central midfielder to The Theatre of Dreams at the end of the 2017-18 campaign, with fellow midfielder Paul Pogba’s future in doubt beyond the summer, and will likely cost around £40m.
