Manchester United’s hopes of finishing in the top four of the Premier League were dealt a blow on Sunday as they were defeated 1-0 by West Ham United.

Said Benrahma’s first-half goal was enough to give the Hammers three points at The London Stadium, with the result making it extremely likely that David Moyes’ side will remain in the top flight beyond this summer.

Erik ten Hag’s side remain in fourth place, but now sit just a single point above fifth-placed Liverpool.

United have already lifted the Carabao Cup this season and face rivals Manchester City in the FA Cup final in June, but Ten Hag will be desperate to finish in the top four and ensure they qualify for the Champions League next term.

In the meantime, it appears that United could make a sensational move for one of La Liga’s biggest stars.

As per The Express, the Red Devils could reignite their interest in Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong.

The Manchester side were heavily linked with the midfielder last summer but ultimately failed in their pursuit, however the report claims that they could now move for him once again this summer.

De Jong could be sold this summer as Barcelona look to balance the books

It is claimed that the Spanish side’s dismal financial situation means they must recoup £176 million before they can begin signing players this summer.

With that in mind, United could eye a move for De Jong, a player that Ten Hag has worked with previously during his time with Ajax.

De Jong, 25, joined Barcelona from the Dutch side back in 2019 and has since made 178 appearances for his current side.

The report suggests that Barcelona are planning to renegotiate his contract soon, though, which could prompt De Jong to look for a move elsewhere.

Despite their interest in the midfielder, it is also claimed that United are set to prioritise other areas of the squad during the upcoming transfer window.

Ten Hag will reportedly be looking to add a striker to his squad with loanee Wout Weghorst set to return to parent club Burnley, and a right-back and central defender are also on the Dutchman’s wishlist.
