Manchester United bounced back from their recent run of results with a dramatic victory at home to Villarreal.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side struggled against Unai Emery’s men, and even fell behind to them early in the second half after Paco Alcacer opened the scoring.

However, Alex Telles scored a sensational volley from Bruno Fernandes’ cross to level the scoring and bring the Reds back into the contest.

With the game petering towards another frustrating result at home, Cristiano Ronaldo popped up in the 95th minute to bundle a last minute winner; sending the United fans into raptures.

It was Ronaldo’s fifth goal in five matches for the club, and with United losing their opening Champions League match against Young Boys, it could perhaps be his most important so far.

However, question marks around the quality of United’s central midfield area continue to linger.

And according to the Daily Star, United have suffered a fresh blow in their pursuit for a new midfielder, as Leeds United are reportedly opening new contract talks with key man Kalvin Phillips.

Kalvin Phillips was reportedly high on Manchester United’s midfield wish list.

The classy midfielder emerged to become one of England’s most important players during the Three Lions’ run to the final of Euro 2020.

He started every single match for Gareth Southgate’s side, and his performances saw him rewarded the England men’s player of the year shortly after the tournament.

And with Solskjaer reportedly wanting to play with one holding midfielder and Paul Pogba and Fernandes ahead of them, Phillips appears to fit the mould for the Norwegian.

Unfortunately, Leeds have cottoned onto this plan and have proceeded to open up talks over a new contract, which would likely scupper any plans for the Reds.

They have also previously been linked with West Ham’s Declan Rice in recent months.
