Manchester United are reportedly set to ramp up their interest in signing Belgium international defender Toby Alderweireld, according to The Telegraph.

The Premier League side, who finished second in the English top-flight standings last term, have been continuously linked with attempting to lure the Tottenham Hotspur centre-back to Old Trafford this summer.

The 29-year-old, who has 75 international caps for his country, was restricted to 21 appearances in all competitions for Spurs last season, including only 13 Premier League starts.

Alderweireld, who joined Tottenham back in July 2015 following his reported £11.5m switch from La Liga outfit Atletico Madrid, has scored six goals in 109 games overall for the North London club.

After confirming a deal is in place to sign Brazil midfielder Fred from Shakhtar Donetsk for around £52m on Tuesday, the report claims United will now concentrate on bringing in defender Alderweireld as their next acquisition.

The Belgian is contracted at Spurs until June 2019, and is valued at £55m.

The Red Devils are awaiting international clearance before fully confirming Fred’s move to Old Trafford, whilst FC Porto full-back Diogo Dalot joined United for around £19m this afternoon to become the club’s first official summer signing.

Alderweireld has admitted while on international duty that he has an idea as to where he wants to play his football next season, but said Tottenham would ultimately decide his future.
