Manchester United are reportedly interested in signing France international defender Raphael Varane, according to Don Balon.

The Premier League side, who lifted the UEFA Europa League and the EFL Cup in 2016-17, have been freshly linked with the Real Madrid centre-half, should the La Liga champions lure goalkeeper David De Gea away from Old Trafford this summer.

The 24-year-old, who has 37 international caps for his country, scored four goals and provided two assists in 39 appearances in all competitions for the Spanish giants last season, who also won the UEFA Champions League last month.

Varane, who arrived at the Bernabeu back in June 2011 following his move from French outfit Lens, has netted 10 times in 189 games overall for Zinedine Zidane’s side.

The report suggests that Red Devils manager Jose Mourinho will not let shot stopper De Gea leave United this summer without the Premier League club signing a Madrid star in return – with the French defender understood to be his preferred target.

Varane could be seen as the ideal central defensive partner for summer signing Victor Lindelof ahead of the 2017-18 campaign, who arrived at The Theatre of Dreams earlier this summer from Benfica.
