Manchester United didn’t have as many players in international action over the Easter weekend as they have had in previous years, but one of their younger stars certainly made an impression for his country.

Paddy McNair, who is primarily a defender and has played at centre-back and full-back for the Red Devils this term, was deployed as a defensive midfielder for Northern Ireland in their friendlies against Wales and Slovenia, and impressed.

The 20-year-old featured in a three-man midfield for Michael O’Neill’s side, almost helping them to their first away win in a friendly for 10 years, until they were eventually held 1-1 at the Cardiff City Stadium last Thursday.

On Monday, McNair helped Northern Ireland to a 1-0 success against Slovenia at Windsor Park – ensuring the nation are now unbeaten in their last 10 international matches.
