Arsenal suffered another away defeat to a fellow ‘big-six’ club on Thursday as they were beaten 3-2 by Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Emile Smith Rowe’s bizarre opener and Martin Odegaard’s strike was cancelled out by a Bruno Fernandes goal and Cristiano Ronaldo brace as Michael Carrick signed off as interim boss with a win.

The Gunners have recovered from a shocking start to the season to put themselves in contention of a top-four finish.

However, despite losing just two of their last 11 Premier League matches, Mikel Arteta’s side have come up short away to Manchester City, Liverpool and now United this season.

And following the match, former Gunners defender Martin Keown questioned Arteta’s decision to once again leave Kieran Tierney out of the side in favour of Nuno Tavares.

“I don’t know. I think that is a mystery,” the three-time Premier League winner said on talkSPORT’s White & Jordan show (skip to 25:41).

“Tavares has done exceptionally well. Maybe the manager doesn’t believe in Tierney as much as we might believe in him.

Keown added if the Scotland star doesn’t regain his place that he could look to leave the Emirates.

Tierney has been an unused sub the past four matches.

“(Tavares) made a few mistakes at Anfield and the manager said; ‘I’m not gonna drop him’. I think there’s a problem brewing with Tierney.

“He’s a real quality player, he’s a leader, the type of defender the Arsenal fans have wanted for years and now he’s not in the team.

“He’s not been near to coming on in any of the games (recently). He’s got to keep his head down keep working and not become a problem for the manager.

“He doesn’t strike me as the sort of lad who’s going to stick around if he doesn’t get a game of football.”

Next up for Arsenal is a trip to out of form Everton on Monday night.

Will Tavares keep his spot at Goodison Park, or will Arteta place his faith in Tierney once again?
