The Champions League returned on Tuesday with Manchester City and Real Madrid both securing victories in the first leg of their last 16 ties.

Holders City ran out 3-1 winners over Danish side FC Copenhagen, while Real defeated German opponents RB Leipzig 1-0.

City will be hoping to complete the remarkable achievement of retaining Europe’s most prestigious trophy, but the likes of Real, Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain will be hoping to stop them from doing so.

French giants PSG are yet to win the Champions League despite dominating Ligue 1 for several years now.

The Parisians may perceive this season as their final chance to do so, as talisman Kylian Mbappe appears closer than ever to departing the club.

The France international’s future has been the subject of huge speculation for several seasons now, but it has now emerged that the star’s representatives reached out to a Premier League side last year.

Mbappe is set to leave PSG this summer

As reported by The Independent, the Frenchman’s agent reached out to Liverpool to gauge their interest last year.

Mbappe, 25, joined PSG from fellow French side Monaco back in 2017, initially on loan, before making his switch permanent the following year.

Since arriving in the French capital, the forward has netted a remarkable 242 goals in 289 matches, as well as providing 105 assists.

The attacker came close to departing Paris in 2022, but later signed a new deal that does include a mutual option to extend the deal until 2025.

Spanish giants Real Madrid have been heavily touted as Mbappe’s most likely destination if he does leave PSG, but the report claims that his representatives got in touch with Liverpool last year to sound out potential interest.

Despite Liverpool showing interest in the player, the report claims that the Merseyside outfit weren’t willing to disrupt their entire financial plan to sanction a move for the player.

The same can be said for Liverpool’s Premier League rivals Arsenal, who are also said to have shunned the idea of a move for Mbappe due to monetary reasons.
