Millwall Lionesses captain Ashlee Hincks breathed a sigh of relief this weekend – she scored her first goal for her side at the Den.

She might be the side’s top goalscorer, with six goals in her 13 appearances – but before the weekend, her performances at home were jinxed.

“It’s my first ever at the Den!” she enthused.

“I hadn’t even noticed until a few games ago, and we were talking in the changing room. Maybe it’ll be like a bus – once one [goal] comes, they all come.”

It was an important goal as well, securing a point against a solid Sheffield side who have looked thoroughly convincing at home during their first season in WSL2.

“It was a physical game – I’m hurting everywhere I could possibly hurt,” she revealed.

“A draw was the right result.”

She signed for the team last spring and has seen plenty of changes since then, most notably several changes of management – Rebecca Sawiuk took over from Dan Mlinar, and after a spell under caretaker Lauren Phillips, Lee Burch is now at the helm.

“We try to keep the younger girls away from it, and just concentrate on training,” added Hincks, who is complimentary about the changes Burch has brought in.

“He’s improved a lot. We now have a style of play – we didn’t before, we changed tactics depending on who we were playing.

“Now we’re set up as a 4-4-2 – it might be a bit old-school, but we’re creating more chances than we have throughout the season.

“He’s brought some life into us – and we’ve got some belief in the team.”

Millwall are firmly ensconced at the lower end of mid-table, so now Hincks and her team-mates are looking ahead.

“It’s all about building for next season,” she said.

“We’ll definitely do well next year!”
