Garry Monk is the overwhelming choice of Sunderland fans to replace Davie Moyes as manager.

The former Leeds boss was the choice of 38% of Sunderland fans in a poll carried out by The Chronicle.

Kevin Phillips was the only other candidate to receive worthwhile support with the fans underwhelmed at the prospect of Derek McInnes, Sam Allardyce, Ryan Giggs or Nigel Pearson taking charge.

Monk has also been linked with the vacancies at Middlesbrough and Crystal Palace and seems certain to be back in the game before the new season starts.

Chief Executive Martin Bain is in charge of the search for a new manager and has called on former Rangers boss Walter Smith for assistance.

Smith is a big fan of McInnes with an approach expected this week asking Aberdeen for permission to speak to their manager.

The one time Bristol City boss is under contract until 2019 with a compensation fee of around £1m required to buy out his contract.
