Sunderland’s worries are set to intensify with full-back Patrick van Aanholt on his way to relegation rivals Crystal Palace.

According to a report in The Sun the Dutchman is close to moving to Selhurst Park after being a month long target of Sam Allardyce.

Davie Moyes doesn’t have his troubles to seek with van Aanholt moving on after back to back defeats from Stokes and West Brom sent them to the foot of the Premier League.

Sunderland’s plight is looking increasingly grim with Moyes admitting that he’s unlikely to bring in any game changers during the January transfer window.

Palace will have to pay out £12m for van Aanholt with Moyes expecting to get the bulk of that fee to reinvest in his squad.

Joleon Lescott could be brought in as a short term and cut price replacement allowing Moyes to spend money elswehere in his side with the main target of the window appearing to be retaining Jermain Defoe against interest from half a dozen admirers.
