Incoming Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag will attempt to persuade Cristiano Ronaldo to stay put ahead of next season.

As per The Telegraph, the Dutchman believes it would be foolish to let the Portuguese leave this summer when he has a further 12 months remaining on his contract.

The 37-year-old signed a two-year deal when he returned to Old Trafford last summer, but speculation has built of late suggesting that the forward will look to leave the club at the end of this season.

Ronaldo has been in sensational form of late, scoring nine goals in his last six league matches.

Ten Hag, who will leave current club Ajax and take over from Ralf Rangnick at the end of the season, is believed to be open to the prospect of building a team around Ronaldo next term.

Ronaldo scored in United’s victory over Brentford on Monday

United have been disappointing this term and look set to have to settle for a place in the Europa League, but Ronaldo’s goals have helped Rangnick avoid what could have been an even more disastrous campaign for the Red Devils.

The former Real Madrid has scored 142 goals in 329 games for United, including 24 goals in 38 games this term.

A number of United players who will depart this summer – including Juan Mata, Phil Jones and Nemanja Matic – all waved goodbye to the Old Trafford crowd at the end of their game against Brentford on Monday, but it wasn’t clear whether Ronaldo was doing so.
