Despite securing a return to the Champions League last season, Newcastle United have started the new campaign poorly.

After an impressive opening weekend victory over Aston Villa, the Magpies have since lost three consecutive matches and sit 14th in the Premier League table at present.

It must be noted, however, that Eddie Howe’s side have endured a challenging run of fixtures during the first month of the season, facing Manchester City, Liverpool and Brighton and Hove Albion.

Last term Howe guided Newcastle to a fourth-placed finish in the league, securing a place in the group stages of this season’s Champions League.

Midfielder Bruno Guimaraes played a pivotal role in securing the top-four spot, and it appears that he could soon be rewarded with a new contract.

As per 90min, the North East outfit have accelerated contract talks with the Brazilian in an effort to deter interest in the player.

Guimaraes could be in line for a new contract at Newcastle

The report claims that Premier League giants Manchester City and Chelsea have both enquired about the availability of the midfielder this summer, and those in charge of Newcastle are therefore keen to tie him down to a new long-term deal.

The Brazil international’s current contract is set to expire in 2026, but Newcastle are keen to agree an extension in a bid to put off the likes of City and Chelsea.

Spanish giants Real Madrid are also believed to have registered an interest in the former Lyon man, who is set for a two-year extension to his contract after progress was made during negotiations.

Guimaraes joined Newcastle last summer and has since made 61 appearances for the club across all competitions, scoring ten goals and providing six assists.

It is also claimed that Newcastle had initially attempted to reach an agreement with Guimaraes late last year, but talks failed to progress.
