Rivals Newcastle United and Sunderland are set to go head-to-head in a battle to sign England international Andros Townsend.
The Premier League duo, who currently sit 19th and 17th in the standings respectively, are both weighing up January moves for the out-of-favour Tottenham forward.
The 24-year-old, who has nine international caps to his name, has failed to score in seven appearances in all competitions for Spurs so far this season.
However Townsend, who is also thought to be drawing interest from Swansea City this New Year, hasn’t featured for Mauricio Pochettino’s side since mid-October in Tottenham’s 2-1 defeat in Belgium to Europa League opponents Anderlecht.
Destined to leave White Hart Lane next month, arch-rivals Newcastle and Sunderland are willing to fight it out for the England winger as both Tyne-Wear outfits seek to avoid relegation come the end of the campaign.
