Newcastle appear to have won the race for Florian Lejeune.

According to a report on TalkSPORT the defender has apparently joined Newcastle from Eibar according to respected Spanish newspaper Marca.

Lejeune was on the books of Manchester City but never made a first team appearance in between being bought from Girona and sold to Eibar.

Rafa Benitez was alerted to the £8.9m get out clause on the defenders contract after impressing as the club from the north of Spain enjoyed a mid table finish in La Liga.

Arsenal and Spurs had shown interest in Lejeune but Benitez beat them to the draw to fill in a key position in his side ahead of the return to the Premier League.

Benitez is expecting to work throughout the close season to bring in the players capable of keeping Newcastle clear of the relegation fight with Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham a loan target.
