Premier League-bound Newcastle United may have been given a boost in their quest to land Fulham midfielder Tom Cairney this summer, as his side failed to achieve promotion from the Championship, reports The Chronicle.

The Cottagers were beaten in the play-off semi-finals by Reading on Tuesday night to see their wait for a return to the top-flight go on for another season, losing 2-1 on aggregate to Jaap Stam’s men following a 1-0 defeat at the Madejski Stadium on Tuesday.

And with 13 goals and ten assists in the Championship for Slavisa Jokanovic’s men this term, 26-year-old Cairney has certainly done his bit in trying to end Fulham’s three-year wait for Premier League football, and as a result has attracted much interest as the season has progressed.

And one side who have repeatedly been linked with a move for the Scotland international is Newcastle, who reportedly held an interest in the midfielder during the January transfer window, but were unable to get a deal done.

However, following the Cottagers’ failure to get back into the top-flight for next season, the 26-year-old may consider his options this summer, and thus could seek a move to the Premier League, seven years after he last graced the top tier with Hull City.

And Rafa Benitez’s Newcastle may be the side to give him that opportunity as they look to bolster their squad ahead of their return to the Premier League, and based on how well Cairney has played this term, he could well do a job for the Magpies in the top-flight next term.
