Newcastle United are making positive progress in their aim to add further players to their squad on Transfer Deadline Day.

The Magpies have reportedly had a bid accepted for Stade Reims star Hugo Ekitike and are set to take Matt Targett on loan from Aston Villa.

Ekitike, 19, has been making headlines in France this term by scoring nine goals in 20 matches across all competitions.

The France Under-20 international had a loan spell last term at Danish side Vejle Boldklub, but according to Sky Sports, his form since returning to his parent club now seems to have him on the verge of moving to the Premier League.

It’s claimed that the Tyneside outfit’s offer for Ekitike is worth £25m, rising to £33m.

Sky Sports’ report also goes on to say that Newcastle are “closing in” on a loan swoop for Targett.

The Villa left-back has slipped down Steven Gerrard’s pecking order since the arrival of Lucas Digne from Everton earlier in the window.

Targett has started 17 Premier League matches this term.

There could also be an option for Targett, who has previously represented Southampton in the Premier League, to move to Newcastle on a permanent transfer in the summer.

These two potential deals look set to follow the arrivals of Bruno Guimaraes, Kieran Trippier, Chris Wood and the impending arrival of Dan Burn, who is undergoing a medical after a fee was agreed with Brighton.

The big question is – will these signings be enough to save Eddie Howe’s side from relegation?
