Newcastle are set to revive their interest in James McCarthy.

According to a report in the Daily Mail the Everton midfielder is high on Rafa Benitez’s wish list for next season’s Premier League campaign.

McCarthy has had an injury interrupted season at Goodison which has spilled into a club v country row involving the Republic of Ireland with Martin O’Neill and Roy Keane clashing with Ronald Koeman.

Despite only making 15 appearances so far this season McCarthy remains very much in demand with a number of clubs keeping tabs on his relationship with Koeman.

Rafa Benitez could guarantee McCarthy first team football with a key role to play as Newcastle attempt to re-establish themselves in the Premier League.

The Newcastle boss will find out by the end of the week what his transfer budget will be after talks with Mike Ashley with Benitez having a number of experienced Premier League players on his wish list.
