Newcastle United are ready to launch a £12m January raid for England international forward Andros Townsend, according to The Sun.

The Premier League side, who sit one point adrift of safety in the league standings following their 3-3 draw against Manchester United in midweek, have been monitoring the Tottenham winger’s situation at White Hart Lane for much of the 2015-16 campaign.

The 24-year-old, who has nine international caps for the Three Lions, has played just 64 minutes of Premier League action under Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino this season.

Townsend, who is also attracting interest from Aston Villa and West Brom, is thought to prefer a big club like Steve McClaren’s Magpies to kick start his career once again ahead of the UEFA European Championships this summer.
