Newcastle United could make a January move for former Premier League striker Nicklas Bendtner, according to The Shields Gazette.

The Premier League side, who currently sit two points adrift of safety in the bottom three, have been linked with a surprise move for the Wolfsburg hitman this month.

The 27-year-old, who has 73 international caps for Denmark, has scored four goals in 16 appearances in all competitions for the Bundesliga outfit this season.

Bendtner; who has stated his desire to quit the German club this month, kick started his career at Premier League leaders Arsenal, scoring 47 goals in 171 first-team games for the Gunners between 2005 and 2014.

The Danish striker was even on loan at the Magpies’ fierce rivals Sunderland during the 2011-12 campaign, where he netted eight goals in 30 appearances for the Black Cats.

German newspaper Bild claim Steve McClaren’s side are interested in launching a loan move for Bendtner.
