Tottenham Hotspur face a battle to keep hold of one of their star midfielders, with Newcastle United circling around the player.

According to The Express, Eddie Howe is planning to swoop for Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg this summer, in a bid to bolster his defensive midfield options.

Jonjo Shelvey has played at the base of the Magpies’ midfield on several occasions since the January arrival of Bruno Guimaraes, but it appears Newcastle are now looking at additions in that particular role.

The report claims that Newcastle, who have been one of the form sides in the Premier League in 2022, taking 32 points from a possible 45, are set for a summer of spending.

Howe spent around £90 million in the mid-season window, acquiring the likes of Guimaraes, Chris Wood and Dan Burn.

Hojbjerg has spent almost two years in north London

It appears he is still on the hunt for further reinforcements, though, and Hojbjerg is high on his list of priorities as the summer window approaches.

The Dane joined Spurs from Southampton in 2020, for a fee of around £15 million, having spent four years on the south coast.

He has been a regular for both Nuno Esperito Santo and Antonio Conte in the time since, making 31 appearances in the Premier League this season.

The Danish international signed a five-year deal when he arrived though, but Spurs may be tempted to part ways with the midfielder for around £30 million, a figure that would represent a 100% increase on the fee they paid to sign him.

Roma, now managed by former Spurs boss Jose Mourinho, are also credited with an interest in the former Bayern Munich man.
