Newcastle United are reportedly interested in re-signing Republic of Ireland international Stephen Ireland.

The Premier League outfit, who currently lie two points above the bottom three after their opening 17 fixtures, are set to make a January swoop for the Stoke City midfielder.

The 29-year-old, who has six international caps for his country, has played just 129 minutes of league action so far this season, assisting one goal in six games for the Potters.

Ireland; who started his career at English top-flight giants Manchester City, originally joined the Magpies on loan from Aston Villa back in January 2011 until the end of the campaign, but he was restricted to just two first-team appearances due to injury.
