Newcastle are hoping to steal a march in the race to sign  Florian Lejeune.

According to a report in The Chronicle a bid of £8.7m has been put in which meets the release clause in the Eibar defender’s contract.

Lejeune had an impressive season in the heart of the Eibar defence as they finished the season in tenth place in La Liga.

Arsenal and Spurs have both been linked with the 26-year-old but are believed to be waiting on the outcome of other options before finalising a bid.

Rafa Benitez’s Spanish contacts alerted the Newcastle boss to the players availability with the former Real Madrid boss moving quickly to put in a bid.

Since getting the all clear from Mike Ashley to rebuild his squad Benitez has been active in the transfer market as he attempts to bring in the players to ensure Newcastle get off to a flying start on their return to the Premier League.
