Premier League-bound Newcastle United are targeting a summer move for Arsenal full-back Kieran Gibbs, according to The Daily Mirror.

The England international has struggled to dispose Nacho Monreal of the left-back position in Arsene Wenger’s side in recent years, and only earned eight Premier League starts this time round to further underline his issues at the Emirates Stadium.

That adds to just 15 league appearances the season before and only 22 the campaign before that, and with Frenchman Wenger now regularly utilising a back three, it looks even more difficult for Gibbs to command a regular starting berth.

Yet Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez is reportedly seeking to hand him a Premier League lifeline this summer, as the Magpies look to bolster their ranks ahead of their return to the top-flight.

The North East giants secured automatic promotion from the Championship at the first time of asking, yet know that reinforcements are needed to compete in the top tier next term.

And there’s little doubt that Gibbs would bolster their defensive options, and with 136 Premier League appearances as well as ten caps for England, the 27-year-old would also provide valuable top-flight experience in a Newcastle squad somewhat lacking in that.

It has been reported that Arsenal would consider £15 million for the left-back, and with Gibbs approaching a pivotal part of his career, it is a move which would surely benefit all parties involved.
