Newcastle United have made enquiries about signing Modou Barrow on loan from Swansea.

According to a report in The Chronicle Rafa Benitez has had to look to alternative wing deals as the bid to resign Andros Townsend struggles to get off the ground.

Mike Ashley is believed to be showing greater interest in transfer activity and is likely to be concerned about another round of signing on fees and agent commissions for a player that was signed from Spurs 12 months ago.

Barrow has been in and out of the Swansea side this season but the Welsh club would prefer a permanent deal with the 24-year-old valued at £5m.

Aston Villa have also been credited with an interest in Barrow with Steve Bruce desperate to bring in new faces to kick-start a run towards a play-off place.

Barrow has had loan spells at Blackburn and Nottingham Forest in 2015 and is believed to be interested in a move to St James Park.
