Newcastle United have sacked manager Steve McClaren after just nine months in charge, with former Liverpool and Real Madrid boss Rafa Benitez expected to replace him in the next couple of days.

The Magpies are currently 19th in the Premier League table, one point from safety, and have decided to make a change following last weekend’s 3-1 home defeat by Bournemouth.

McClaren won only six of his 28 Premier League matches in charge of the club, in what has been another dismal season for the Tyneside outfit as they are involved in a relegation battle for the second successive campaign.

Rumours suggest that Benitez, who was sacked by Real Madrid at the start of the year, will be the former England boss’ replacement at St James’ Park, but it is unclear whether he will be appointed in time to be in charge of a the trip to league leaders Leicester City on Monday night.
