Newcastle United are reportedly edging closer to sealing the signing of England international Jonjo Shelvey for around £12m.

The Premier League side, who currently sit two points adrift of safety in the bottom three, have been heavily linked with a January move for the out-of-favour Swansea City midfielder this month.

The 23-year-old, who has six international caps for the Three Lions, has scored just one goal in 16 league appearances for the Swans this season.

Shelvey, who cost the Welsh outfit around £5m back in July 2013 following his switch from Liverpool, reportedly had a falling out with club chairman Huw Jenkins over the dismissal of former manager Garry Monk last year.

English top-flight rivals Crystal Palace have also been linked with a £10m move for Shelvey this month.

Newcastle yesterday confirmed their first January addition – spending £4.5m on winger Henri Saivet from Ligue 1 club Bordeaux.
