Two sides who had mixed festive periods face each other at Carrow Road on Saturday, with Norwich looking to climb further away from trouble and Southampton hoping to close the gap between themselves and the top half.
The hosts picked up a valuable three points against relegation rivals Aston Villa on Monday, which was the perfect reaction to a comprehensive defeat against Tottenham on Boxing Day.
Alex Neil’s side have put together an impressive run of seven points from four games – including matches against Everton and Manchester United – which has seen them climb to 15th in the Premier League table.
Their home record so far this season is consistently inconsistent; they have won three, drawn three and lost three in front of their own fans to date. Norwich claimed the three points last time these two met in East Anglia in the Premier League; Nathan Redmond’s goal securing a 1-0 win.
Southampton ended their wobble with a resounding 4-0 win over Arsenal on Boxing Day, but succumbed to a 2-1 defeat at West Ham on Monday that leaves them in 12th.
The Saints have won just twice on the road all season – against Chelsea and Sunderland – and will be disappointed with their season so far after their excellent campaign last time out; a win this weekend would be the ideal way to inspire a change of fortunes going into the New Year.
Southampton haven’t won at Carrow Road since the two sides met in League One in 2010, but they did win the reverse fixture 3-0 at St. Mary’s in August.
Andre Wisdom could be back after a hamstring injury but Matt Jarvis (knee) is missing for the hosts, who can otherwise picking from a fully-fit squad as they look to continue their promising recent run.
The visitors will again have to cope without striker Graziano Pelle and full-back Cedric Soares, who also missed the festive fixtures. Oriel Romeu is suspended after picking up his fifth booking of the season against West Ham on Monday.
