With Tottenham striker Harry Kane seemingly available this summer, it’s no surprise the rumour mill turns about clubs that could scramble to acquire the Three Lions captain.

Kane is a World Cup Golden Boot winner and is unrelenting in his pursuit of goals and assists in every competition he appears in, with Manchester United amongst local rivals Manchester City and more linked.

The Old Trafford based club have a chance at major silverware on Wednesday, when they take on Unai Emery’s Villareal in the Europa League final in Gdansk.

However, former Red Devils midfielder Owen Hargreaves has claimed they should be focussing elsewhere if they want long term success.

Hargreaves told Goal: “United could win the Europa League but the goal is to win the Premier League and the Champions League and to do that they need investment, the right recruitment, key players in certain positions.

“If you look at the squad Man City has, with the utmost respect to everyone else, that’s the best team in the country. They’ve got a coach that’s super innovative but the depth of players they have, I don’t think anyone in the country can compete.

Harry Kane gave a lap of honour around the Tottenham Hotspur stadium following what could be his final home fixture with Spurs

“I like Lindelof, I think he’s a really good player, but I think you’ve seen the impact [Ruben] Dias has had at Man City and the impact [Virgil] Van Dijk had [at Liverpool] and it might take getting one of those guys in to help Man Utd take the next step.

“I’m sure everyone would love Harry Kane but that’s going to cost a lot of money, so you potentially could get two or three players for maybe one of those types of players.”

While Kane could and probably should end up costing over £100m, is that too steep a price to pay for a player who has provided 22 goals and 13 assists in 34 Premier League matches this season?

A long-term improvement that has been identified by many for Manchester United is the centre-back partner to captain Harry Maguire.

Hargreaves is one of those, adding: “Defensively they can get tighter, I like [Axel] Tuanzebe. I think he has the potential to be something really great but he’s had some injuries.”

Manchester United fans – would you rather a couple of signings – including a centre-back – or one big push for goalscorer phenomenon Kane?
