The Premier League returns on Friday when Fulham welcome Manchester United to Craven Cottage.

Manchester City became the first team in history to win four consecutive English top flight titles last term, and Pep Guardiola will be desperate to see his side extend that record this season.

Erling Haaland has been in fine form during pre-season, and the Norwegian striker will fancy his chances of scoring against Chelsea on Sunday.

But, will the former Borussia Dortmund man win a third consecutive Golden Boot?

Here, we take a look at five contenders to finish as this season’s Premier League top scorer.

Erling Haaland – Manchester City

Haaland took the Premier League by storm after signing for City two years ago, netting a remarkable 36 times in 35 league games during his first season in England. The 24-year-old followed that up with a 27-goal haul in the top flight last term, and he looks to be in good form having scored a hat-trick during a 4-2 win over Chelsea in pre-season last week. The Norway international will undoubtedly go into the new campaign as the favourite to win the Golden Boot.

Mohamed Salah – Liverpool

Egypt international Salah shared the Golden Boot with Tottenham’s Son Heung-Min three seasons ago – the last time the award wasn’t won by Haaland. The ex-Chelsea man boasts a staggering record in the Premier League, netting 157 times in 263 games across spells with both the Blues and the Reds. Last season he scored 18 times in the league, and new head coach Arne Slot will be hoping that he can continue to carry an attacking threat despite being heavily linked with a move to Saudi Arabia for much of the summer window so far.

Ollie Watkins – Aston Villa

Watkins enjoyed a remarkable campaign last term, netting 19 times in the league for Unai Emery’s side as they secured qualification for the Champions League this term. The Englishman’s form earned him a call-up to the Three Lions squad for the European Championships earlier this summer, and he enjoyed one of the most iconic moments of the tournament when his last gasp goal against The Netherlands sent England to the final. It remains to be seen whether playing in the Champions League will have an impact on Villa’s – and therefore Watkins’ – domestic performances, but otherwise he will be among the favourites to top the scoring charts.

Dominic Solanke – Tottenham Hotspur

Solanke completed a £65 million move from Bournemouth to Tottenham last week, ending Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou’s hunt for a replacement for Harry Kane. Son Heung-Min was primarily used as Tottenham’s striker last term, but Solanke will now occupy the central attacking role after scoring 19 goals in the league for the Cherries last term. Many felt that the ex-Chelsea man was unfortunate not to be included in the England squad for Euro 2024, but he will now be given arguably a better chance to force his way back into the national team setup.

Cole Palmer – Chelsea

Many people were surprised when the Blues splashed £40 million to sign Palmer from Man City last summer, but the Englishman wasted very little time in justifying his price tag. The attacker eventually finished the season having netted 22 times in 34 league games, as well as providing ten assists. That form earned him a place in the England squad for the Euros, where he again impressed. Now, Palmer returns to Chelsea and is joined by Pedro Neto and a fit-again Christopher Nkunku, suggesting that the England international will have plenty more support in attach for Enzo Maresca’s side during the upcoming campaign.
