Bayern Munich president Uli Hoeness believes Manchester United midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger could be on the verge of retirement, via ESPN FC.

The Premier League side, who currently sit sixth place in the English top-flight table following Sunday’s 1-1 draw at home to West Ham United, have failed to feature the former Germany international in any first-team competitions so far this season.

Hoeness, who was re-elected as Bayern Munich’s president last week, said, “From what I have heard, Basti’s on his way out of football.

“I know him well and I doubt he’s still got the fire left in him for one final major challenge.

“After such a brilliant career, a player like him shouldn’t see out his career in a place like America. For me, America simply isn’t an alternative for a player of his calibre.

“As far as I know, he’s committed to a massive farewell game at FC Bayern. I would do that but then I would retire.”

Schweinsteiger has scored one goal and provided two assists in 31 games for the Red Devils since arriving at Old Trafford back in July 2015.
