Manchester United will be without captain Wayne Rooney tonight for their Champions League Group B clash at Dutch champions PSV Eindhoven.

The striker was not involved in Saturday’s 3-1 win against Liverpool after straining his hamstring in training. The former Everton forward scored his 50th goal for England last week. becoming his country’s all-time leading scorer.

United, whose boss Louis van Gaal returns to his homeland, will look for a positive start to their group after qualifying for the group stage. They beat Club Brugge 7-1 on aggregate after not participating in the competition last season for the first time since 1995.

Anthony Martial scored on his debut and will be looking to keep that run going. His record breaking move from Monaco, reportedly costing an initial £36m, has put huge pressure on the 19-year-old’s shoulders.

James Wilson has been added to the 18-man squad although Louis van Gaal is likely to deploy Marouane Fellaini in attack once more.

Andreas Pereira and Memphis Depay return to their former club tonight. The £31m summer signing has made a decent start to his United career scoring two goals in all competitions. He scored 22 league goals last term to help the hosts win the Eredivisie for the first time since 2008.

David De Gea will remain in goal after signing a new four-year deal at Old Trafford following his collapsed move to Real Madrid. A deal was minutes from completion before the paperwork was not submitted in time.

The Dutch side, who won the competition in 1988, come into this game unbeaten in the division and on the back of a 6-0 thrashing of Cambuur on Saturday.

United will need to be wary of Luuk de Jong. The ex-Newcastle loanee netted a hat-trick in the match and will be determined to fire his side to a win in their first Champions League group game since 2008/09.
