Rangers are reportedly in talks to sign Burnley midfielder Joey Barton on a free transfer, according to BBC Sport.

The former Manchester City and Newcastle United player is out of contract with the Clarets, who were promoted to the Premier League after winning the Championship title, and despite being named in the division’s team of the season, is said to be considering a move away from Turf Moor rather than signing a new deal at Turf Moor.

It is understood that the 33-year-old would be offered a longer deal than he would get at Burnley if he was to move to north of the border for the side who are back in the Scottish Premiership, and the one-time capped England international has already been shown around Rangers’ training ground, with talks continuing and a deal possibly imminent.

Barton made 40 appearances in all competitions for Burnley this term, scoring three goals as Sean Dyche’s men lifted the Championship trophy.
