World champions Argentina will hope to add another trophy to their cabinet when the Copa America starts on Friday.

Lionel Scaloni’s side lifted the World Cup in Qatar in December 2022, and he will be hoping to see his side once again emerge victorious in the United States of America this summer.

There are a number of Premier League stars in Scaloni’s squad, including Aston Villa goalkeeper Emi Martinez and Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian Romero.

Now, though, it appears that the latter has attracted interest from one of Europe’s biggest clubs ahead of the upcoming summer transfer window.

According to Argentinian outlet ESPN via 90min, Spanish giants Real Madrid are interested in Spurs defender Cristian Romero.

The 26-year-old has impressed since joining the Lilywhites from Italian outfit Atalanta on an initial loan in 2021, before making the switch permanent a year later.

Romero has reportedly attracted interest from European champions Real Madrid

In total he has made 98 appearances for Tottenham across all competitions, and he formed an impressive defensive partnership with Micky van de Ven under Ange Postecoglou last term.

The Argentine played 34 times last season, including 33 Premier League games, and captained Spurs on several occasions.

Despite his importance to Spurs, the report claims that European champions Real Madrid are on the hunt for defensive reinforcements and have identified Romero as a potential target.

Last season, both David Alaba and Eder Militao suffered long-term injuries and missed significant parts of the season for Madrid, and the La Liga giants are therefore looking for potential targets to bolster Carlo Ancelotti’s squad.

Romero’s current contract with Tottenham is set to run until the end of the 2026/27 season, but the London club may face a battle to keep hold of the defender if Real formalise their interest in the player.
