BT Sport pundit Robbie Savage has urged Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk to take the opportunity of a move in Janaury.

The Netherlands international has been a standout performer in the Premier League since he joined the Saints in 2015, and is now being linked with a move away from the club.

According to reports, the former Celtic man is  target for a number of Premier League sides, including Chelsea, Liverpool and Everton.

However, the 25-year-old is reportedly happy to stay put on the south coast this month after considering what the club have done for him since his move.

But former Leicester and Birmingham midfielder, Robbie Savage, feels that the towering centre-half must take the opportunity to move as soon as he can.

Speaking to Shoot! Savage said:

“He has been very, very good but I’ve seen reports around £50m which is an awful lot of money considering what they [Southampton] paid for him.

“I moved in January on two occasions, it is a difficult time to move but if you wait another centre back who is playing well and is cheaper may come along,

“I always believe, as a player, that if the opportunity is there then you can’t wait. But that is just for me personally, I did everything I could to go, but van Dijk might be different.

“If an opportunity is there for a player then that opportunity may not come along again.”

With Southampton captain Jose Fonte having handed in a transfer request at the club where he has spent the last seven years, manager Claude Puel will be reluctant to see his two first choice defenders leave in the same month, so a move for van Dijk, who has been rated at £60m, would be hard to come by.
