According to reports in Italy, Southampton have made an £8.5m bid for Napoli centre-back Kalidou Koulibaly.

Saints are keen to tie up a deal for Celtic defender Virgil van Dijk, but with the Scottish Premiership champions understood to be putting any deal on hold until after their Champions League qualifiers against Malmo, they may now look elsewhere.

That has led them to make an offer for the Frenchman, who the South Coast side believe they can obtain for a lower fee than manager Ronald Koeman’s Dutch counterpart.

Koulibaly made 39 appearances in all competitions for the Serie A outfit in the 2014-15 season following a transfer from Genk last summer, scoring one goal.
