Liverpool took a huge step towards reaching the Carabao Cup final with a 2-1 win over Fulham in the first leg of their semi-final on Wednesday evening.

The visitors took the lead at Anfield when they capitalised on a mistake by Virgil van Dijk, with Brazilian winger Willian finding the net.

Marco Silva’s side looked set to take a positive result into the second leg at Craven Cottage, before quickfire goals from Curtis Jones and Cody Gakpo turned the game on its head and put the Reds in control of the tie.

Jurgen Klopp guided Liverpool to the Carabao Cup two years ago, and the German will be hoping to add another trophy to his cabinet this season.

In the meantime, it appears that Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard could try to sign two players from his former club.

The ex-England captain is the current manager of Saudi Arabian side Al-Ettifaq, and 90min claims that he could look to sign Thiago Alcantara and Joel Matip when their respective contracts expire this summer.

Last summer, Gerrard lured Jordan Henderson from Merseyside to the Middle East, and the report claims that he could attempt to do the same this summer.

Both Thiago and Matip are able to sign a pre-contract agreement with any foreign club this month, as they are both in the final six months of their deals.

Matip, 32, joined the Reds from German outfit Schalke back in 2016 and has since made more than 200 appearances for the club across all competitions.

The Cameroon international has been a regular for Klopp’s side for the majority of his time at Anfield, but a recent cruciate ligament tear means he has likely already played his final game for the club.

Thiago, meanwhile, joined Liverpool from German side Bayern Munich in 2020 and has played 97 times for the Reds.

The Spain international has also suffered with frequent injuries since moving to England, and he is yet to feature so far this season due to a hip injury.
