The Belgium international has been one of the best defenders in the Premier League since moving to Tottenham in 2012, and has struck up an impenetrable partnership with compatriot Toby Alderweireld at the heart of Pochettino’s backline.

However, Vertonghen is also an excellent full-back, and his defensive instincts, strength on and off the ball, and fine eye for a pass gives the 30-year-old the nod in this team.
