Southampton look set to ease their defensive injury crisis by signing former Juventus and Barcelona defender Martin Caceres – a move that’s been welcomed by Ryan Bertrand.

Uruguay international Caceres who has 68 caps for his country is a free agent, therefore eligible to sign for the Saints outside of the transfer window, and with the recent long term injury to Virgil van Dijk, Claude Puel seems to have decided to move for the 29 year-old who’s transfer is now subject to gaining a work permit.

Carceres has suffered with injury problems of late having not played a competitive game for over a year but that doesn’t worry Bertrand who told Sky Sports:

“He may have been injured but that doesn’t necessarily change the player. I’m sure – I’ve heard just as much as you – but if the deal was to go through it would only strengthen the team.

“He has got great pedigree and if we can get the best out of him he will be a fantastic signing for the club.”

Southampton will be hoping Carceres can fill the void not just left by Van Dijk’s injury but also the departed Jose Fonte, no mean feat, but if he does complete his move to St. Mary’s the defender can take comfort in the fact at least one of his new team mates, will be buoyed by his arrival.
